Therapy is a challenging process; and it is crucial that you feel safe and comfortable with your therapist. Exploring your history, pain, shame, and struggles takes a lot of effort and energy. It is a vulnerable process. While vulnerability is a brave choice, it’s also physically uncomfortable and emotionally scary.
When you choose a therapist, you are choosing a person to trust with your story, to trust with your vulnerability. The therapeutic relationship is unique from a friendship in many ways; even though it is important that you like the therapist enough to want to share and earn your trust. It is a professional relationship where you set the goals, direct what is important to focus on, and you are the sole priority of each session. The therapist’s role is to honor your story, your efforts, and to use our training, our skills, to provide the atmosphere, safe relationship and space for you to share; and to help you develop coping skills to process and move towards your goals.
One size does not fit all, and this process looks different for everyone. We encourage you to find a therapist that is a good fit for you, and know that YOU GET TO CHOOSE YOUR THERAPIST.
